This time of year is my favorite time to be in the whitetail woods. Specifically November 7th-14th seems to always be the peak of the rut. This last weekend my friend jordan and I climbed high up into the mountains in search of highland whitetails, and elk. This was my first elk hunt in Montana, so I was exited to say the least. Jordan and I got up into a high elevation draw by mid morning, and It wasn’t long before we heard some cows talking, and a bugle in the distance. We made a gameplan and decided to sit for fifteen minutes or so and they we made a move on em. Slowly we crept along this ridgline where we would have a vantage point of where we thought the elk would be. Instead, we crept up on a bedded 8 pt, which was hard for Jordan to pass up. He made a great shot and the buck was down quick.
We then realized that we were a good ways back in the mountains, and it was going to be a long drag out. After we got it filed dressed, we used found a good solid piece of wood to lash some paracord to, which allowed us both to combine our strength to pull the buck out. It was tough going through thick brush, over logs, and down steep slides. After about 3 miles and close to 5 hours we finally had the deer in the bed of the truck. It was a long day to say the least, but worth every second of it.Last night I went and sat in my bowstand, down in the valley. This was the first day of good rut activity i’ve seen this year. 3 different bucks were seen chasing does, including one very nice shooter getting close to the 140″ class. Unfortunately the only buck in range was a basket 6 or 8 point that I chose to pass up. Probably a 2.5 year old deer, but will definitely be a nice buck in a couple years.
A big winter storm is arriving right now in Missoula. It should amp up the rut to peak in the next week or so. Hopefully we will get another migration of big greenheads in, and it shouldn’t be long before the goldeneyes show up as well. Unfortunately I haven’t fished since last weekend, partly because this is a great time to be hunting, and also the fishing hasn’t been epic or anything too great. But I will hopefully get out soon. Thanks for reading, and no matter where you are, get outside and hunt or fish this weekend!
